LIB DEMS DEMAND BETTER FOR TRAFFORD’S CHILDREN’S SERVICES
At tonight’s emergency Full Council meeting to discuss the OFSTED ‘inadequate’ report into Trafford’s Children’s Services, we saw the true nature of political discourse between the two old parties who have run Trafford for decades.
In a shocking display of political tribalism, the Conservative Group tabled a motion attacking the current Labour administration, which the ruling Labour Party duly amended. After a debate filled with accusations and blame, the amended motion passed.
The Liberal Democrat Group abstained from voting on this motion as it was simply a political point scoring exercise. Our group leader Cllr Jane Brophy (Timperley Ward) said,
‘’It is a very worrying and serious issue that Trafford received an ‘inadequate’ judgement. Councillors should take this feedback to heart.
I understand that the report was discussed in depth at Children’s and Young People’s scrutiny committee last night, which is where it should be dealt with.
The Liberal Democrat Group would like to thank and give our full support to all the dedicated staff within Trafford’s Children’s Services, who are working under extremely challenging circumstances.
Liberal Democrat councillors can’t support this issue being politicised at Full Council.
We need to work together and across party lines to ensure better services are provided for Trafford’s children.’’
We should listen to professional advice and bring this into Council decision-making at every available opportunity. This, alongside reversing the youth services and early years intervention cuts that have led to a disproportionate amount of young people and children falling through the cracks in Trafford’s services.
