Greater Manchester Police are wiping away unsolved crimes

Greater Manchester Police are facing fresh accusations of not properly investigating crimes. The force has launched Operation Capella, which intends to shut down crimes that are “clogging the system”.

Leader of Trafford Liberal Democrats Councillor Shaun Ennis said, “Any move that further undermines public confidence in the reporting of crime is deeply unwelcome.”

“Greater Manchester Police was placed in special measures in December 2020 largely because the force had failed to record crimes, leaving one in five crimes going completely unrecorded.”

“The public in Greater Manchester were told that these problems had been put right. That was the explanation given when GMP was taken out of special measures two years later.”

“For GMP to now face accusations of closing down crimes even when evidence is available raises questions that Andy Burnham - as Police and Crime Commissioner - must answer.  He must come to the Greater Manchester Scrutiny Committee to explain Operation Capella and why Greater Manchester Police feel the need to close down unresolved crimes in this way.”
