Trafford Liberal Democrats have criticised the council for leaving Vehicle Activated Speed (VAS) signs broken as new figures show that Trafford’s roads have been branded the 20th most dangerous in the country. VAS signs show the speed of oncoming vehicles and warn drivers when they are travelling faster than the speed limit, they have been proven to reduce speeding in dangerous areas.

Lib Dem Councillor Will Frass of Timperley North Ward said, “The VAS sign on Park Road has been broken for many years. The council seems in no hurry to fix it either. I was promised it would be repaired following a review of all the VAS signs in Trafford. That review was supposed to finish in Autumn 2024, but we still have no working sign.”

According to Home Office figures reported this week, Trafford has one of the highest rates of dangerous driving anywhere in England with 73 dangerous driving offences per 100,000 people over the age of 17, meaning that Trafford places 20th on the list of councils with the most dangerous roads.

Councillor Frass said, “People rightly have concerns about road safety, especially near schools. Plus the fact it’s really antisocial to speed along Park Road at night. If the Lib Dems were running Trafford, these figures would spur us into action. We would be getting council officers to fix VAS signs in important locations for a start, but the current Labour administration is struggling to get the basics right.”
